NOTUS is the brainchild of Erwin Clauws. Erwin has 30 years of experience under his belt as a graphic designer-typographer, visual artist and teacher-master’s supervisor at the LUCA School of Arts in Ghent, Belgium.
His expertise in graphic design is mainly focused on ‘corporate identity’, the visual communication and typography of management/organizational information and complex mass data and visual research into forms and input fields.
His expertise in visual art centers on practical and theoretical research into the landscape, in particular the ‘metaphysical landscape’ and its proponents; a second topic of research is ‘abstract visual language versus recognition and content’ and a third topic of interest is the pictorial qualities of digital photography and professional inkjet printing. He applies the latter in monumental graphic photography and genre-interior photography seen as a still life. In 2010 he took first place in the Asse Visual Arts Prize. In 2011 he was nominated for the Belgian Province of East Flanders Visual Arts Prize. More information about his visual works can be found at www.erwinclauws.info.
His approach to education is simple, namely ‘to develop qualities of a person that are specific to the individual by means of highly personal guidance and empathy with respect to the person and their world’. For Erwin, education means two things: the attainment of an official certificate or diploma that opens certain doors that would otherwise remain closed. The opening of new doors of opportunity can lead to the further or diversified development of the individual throughout their entire life. The second side of education is the acquisition of an holistic view of society and the arts in particular, again with the goal of further individual development. As a group leader he is known for bringing out creativity in individuals and in groups and encouraging the exploration of new approaches. Erwin also makes regular contributions to the designer’s collective MdSt, which focuses on creations characterized by hybrid forms from or based on those found in the art, design and crafts industries. More about the designer’s collective MdSt: www.mdst.be
Finally, he has had a lifelong fascination for 20th century and contemporary classical music and its scores. This is what has consequently led to the development of the NOTUS system of music notation as an ultimate symbiosis of his knowledge as a designer, abstract artist and teacher and his championing of the individual development of people from all walks of life. As a result, Notus has been created in line with his humanistic approach and the rules of contemporary visual communication and infographics. In 2016 Erwin founded the publishing company NOTUS&BOOKS&SHEETS in order to promote NOTUS.
